We have a duty

I attended the Rally last week in Washington DC to protest a subcommittee hearing on H.R. 4423 nicknamed the DARK Act. H.R. 4423 is a clever way to 'get GMOS' labeled while stripping States' Rights away and allowing GMOs to be labeled as natural. Well, you and I know better about that. So I boarded a bus that was offered by the Organic Consumers Association to have concerned citizens show up in D.C. on the morning of the hearing and be present. I packed a back pack and loaded my 8 yr old and myself on an overnight bus to DC and did my duty and was present. You can read about my trip HERE.

We have a duty to protect our food and water sources.

As a mother, I used to think that my hardest battle with food and my children would be to get them to eat their vegetables. Now, I have to make sure the vegetables I source are organic or local/no spray.

As an activist it is overwhelming to me to present very factual clear evidence of pesticide loads, the diseases they cause, and the non nutritive value in conventionally grown commercial food to be told " That's YOUR thing, I'm not that interested."

How can the health; immediate and long term health of your family not be YOUR thing?

How can protecting the your child's fertility and body against cancer not be YOUR thing?

Are we really that lazy as a society where it is easier to feed our children the cheapest of foods during their formative years and pretend that there are not better options. That good parenting means be permissive with their diet and health?

Get One Give One

A "Big Deal" from the Tea Collection came across my desk this morning.
Giving money to companies that share my concept of ethics and give back make me all warm and fuzzy. Toms is a huge one and I am keenly watching their partnership with Target to see how successful the venture is. Tea Collection; a boutique children and women's clothing line is doing something similar this holiday season.

For every item purchased from one of Tea’s Holiday Styles shops, Tea will donate a similar style to the Homeless Children’s Playtime Project, an organization that strives to nurture healthy child development by empowering children living in temporary housing programs. The Buy One, Give One program will continue through Christmas. This is the perfect opportunity for our readers to get beautiful globally-inspired holiday styles for their little citizens and help other children at the same time.

Yekra Player

Yekra is a revolutionary new distribution network for feature films.

Bought

The hidden story about vaccines, autism, drugs and food… Americas health has been BOUGHT. Your health, your family’s health. Now brought to you by Wall Street… “If you thought they hurt us with the banks, wait till you see what they’re doing to health care.” Vaccines. GMOs. Big Pharma. Three big, BIG, okay… HUGE topics in one film. Why? Why not 3 films, why put all this in one movie? Great question, 2 answers. 1st and most importantly: We need to band together. We need a mainstream film, not another radical movie that only interests the “already converted”. Over 5 million people supported Prop 37 in CA. Reportedly, over 2 million worl...ndustrialized food, our insane vaccine expansion, and our love affair with pharmaceuticals- it’s the same villain. It’s a risky story to tell, but would be a tragedy to passively consent to with silence. There is something horribly wrong with health care today. Huge money, billions and billions of dollars flowing into the same pockets. Meanwhile, MD’s aren’t being allowed to actually practice the art of medicine and anyone who questions vaccination safety, pharmaceuticals, factory farms, etc. is ridiculed and belittled. Meanwhile, the billions keep flowing, carried on a river of pain and anguish. Huge corporations funded by individual misery, one broken life at a time. Three huge stories, each worthy of multiple films, but each brought together by one staggering fact: it’s the same villain. These three story lines converge on Wall Street, in a tale of corruption, greed and shocking lack of conscience.

The past three months offered no organic apples or fresh fruits other than pre-packaged sliced apples and a brief show of fresh organic blueberries, AGAIN. I used to spend most of my fresh produce budget at Costco and I am spending way less there and have now subscribed to a delivery service from this local company that services  the Greater Charleston Area. My order yesterday was less than I normally pay, fresh and enough to get me through the week without my fresh fruit and veg going to waste. I love that I can create my own like/dislike list and substitute 3 items if I like.

South Carolina Prepares for Solar Revolution

by Brandon  Baker from EW May 22, 2014
South Carolina’s House of Representatives voted in favor of legislation that would expand solar energy in a fledgling market by a whopping 105-0 count, The State reported. A similar version recently passed the state senate. The final version should soon be on Gov. Nikki Haley’s desk for a signature.

“This is truly a big deal,” said Rep. Robert Brown, D-Charleston. “A giant step in moving South Carolina forward in renewable energy.”
The bill comes after two years of intense negotiations. It is considered a compromise bill between utilities like SCE&G and Duke Energy and green groups like the Southern Environmental Law Center and the S.C. Coastal Conservation League.
It’s nowhere near as aggressive as laws in other states, but it represents a start. Under the legislation, investor-owned utilities in South Carolina must buy or invest in more solar energy by 2021. They must get 2 percent of their average five-year peak power demand from solar panels.
“Across the South, states like North Carolina and Georgia have already moved to take advantage of local, affordable solar power, and this compromise legislation is what South Carolinians have been waiting for,” Katie Ottenweller, head of Southern Environmental Law Center’s solar initiative, said in a statement earlier this year.
“With smart, forward-looking policies in place, the state’s solar market can and will grow rapidly, bringing enormous benefits to the people of South Carolina.”

Do People That Eat Margarine Really Know How It's Manufactured?

From PreventDisease.com
Polyunsaturated margarine became a major part of the Western diet and had overtaken butter in popularity in the mid-20th century. Despite their best efforts, the margarine lobby has failed to convince most people that their synthetic concoctions are healthy. So what is not obvious to most of the people who consume it? The manufacturing process of course, which is very similar to the way plastic is produced.

Got Hogweed??

Giant Hogweed (Heracleum mantegazzianum) is an invasive species first introduced to the Americas from Asia as an ornamental garden plant. Looking at this giant from the carrot family you can see the beauty in such a toxic plant.

Giant Hogweed

Giant Hogweed grows along streams and rivers and in fields, forests, yards and roadsides, and a giant hogweed plant can reach 15-20 feet or more in height with compound leaves up to 5 feet in width. Avoid contact with the plant, take a photo and report it in any state you live in.

Giant Hogweed seeds.
Giant hogweed sap contains toxins known as furanocoumarins. When the toxins come into contact with the skin and are exposed to sunlight, they cause a condition called phytophotodermatitis, a reddening of the skin often followed by severe blistering and burns. These very painful injuries can last for several months, and even after they have subsided the affected areas of skin can remain sensitive to light for years. Furanocoumarins can also cause cancer and birth defects. The sap can also cause temporary (or even permanent) blindness if introduced into the eyes.

Giant Hogweed Leaves
In South Carolina you can report Giant Hogweed to the Clemson University Plant Problem Clinic at 864-656-2677. You can send your photos to Botanist John Nelson at USC for verification, plantman@herbarium.org

Ewwwww What's on Your Easter Candy??

The Shocking Truth About Jelly Beans

reposted from Village Green Network

Jelly beans, a favorite Easter candy. But when you find out what’s actually in jelly beans, you may not want to eat them anymore.

The Shocking Truth About Jelly Beans

Jelly beans are coated with shellac to make them shiny. Shellac, also known as pharamceutical glaze or confectioner’s glaze, is recognized as GRAS under the FDA or Generally Recognized As Safe for human consumption. But just because it’s safe, doesn’t mean you want to eat it.
The disgusting fact is that shellac, used on jelly beans, is made from the excrement of beetles. In other words, beetle dung, or bug poop.

How Shellac Is Made

The female lac bug, Kerria lacca, found in the forests of India and Thailand, secretes excrement (poop), which forms a tunnel-like tube on the branches of trees. These tunnels referred to as cocoons, although they are not really cocoons. The insects live off of the sap of the tree and excrete the dung onto the tree.
The Shocking Truth About Jelly Beans
The beetle dung is scraped from the tree branches and heated. The raw shellac, which contains bark shavings and lac bug parts, begins to liquefy, and the bark and bug bits are strained out. The sticky shellac is then dried into a flat sheet and broken up into flakes, then bagged and sold. The dried shellac is then mixed with denatured alcohol in order to dissolve the flakes and make liquid shellac.
Where Is Shellac Used?
Shellac is used in the manufacture of a number of products including furniture polish and varnish; aluminum foil; lipstick, hairspray, shampoos, mascara and perfume; printing ink and paints; pharmaceutical tablets; and agricultural fertilizer.
In foods, shellac is most commonly used as a coating or glaze on confections, chewing gum, and coffee beans, as well as some fruits including apples.

Candies (Other Than Jelly Beans) That Contain Shellac

As a general rule, all hard-coated, shiny candies contains a shellac coating or glaze. M&Ms™ is one exception — they do not contain shellac.
  • Hershey’s Whopper’s Malted Milk Balls™
  • Hershey’s Milk Duds™
  • Nestle’s Raisinettes™
  • Nestle’s Goober’s™
  • Junior Mints™

Charleston Costco March 2014 Shopping List

Charleston Costco has stocked new and exciting items for our pleasure ; a new organic seed starter pack, a double composter, new organic animal cracker cookies, some great frozen organic items and a few new; interesting frozen options.

Discontinued items {insert frownie face}: Carrington Farms Organic Chia Seed, -- and all items with asterisks.

Noted with a gasp was the over 5 dollar increase on Quinoa from 12.69 to a whooping 19.99

A warning about price increase to consumer demand has certainly come to fruition with such a huge price increase at Costco and online everywhere.
Fresh Organic produce showed organic blueberries and apples mid month in
February but nothing for early March shoppers. Shoppers at the start of March had apple slices and apple packs to choose from. I am again disappointed there were zero additional fresh fruit organic options this month.
The demand is there, the items sell out, I don't understand why the organic options are not here in Charleston. Other Costco locations keep a lot of organic options in the store. I am weary with disappointment with the search for fresh organic fruits at Costco.

As always the grapes, pretty berries, and bananas taunt me with their fruity-ness, but I decline them all in search for the better options. Non-organic berries, bananas, and grapes are a deal breaker and one of the worst on the Dirty Dozen. A stop at Earth Fare has become standard for organic fruit purchases after my Costco trip.

I am keeping the pressure on about the organics and needing fruit selections and you can too. On each trip to Costco, I visit the member suggestion table across from the soda fountain. You can request items, ask questions, and thank Costco for increasing the number of Organics and GMO-free options. Please remember to thank them, the NONGMO verified items and organics they carry are increasing in frozen and dry goods.

They respond to the demand of the customers, if we buy it, they will continue to sell it, if we ask for it, they will try to get it for us. -- Beth
